Newton police honor father, children for rescuing man trapped under fallen tree

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — A father and his two children were honored by the Newton Police Department for helping rescue a neighbor trapped beneath a fallen tree, authorities said.

The trio — Eric Smith and his children — received civilian awards at a March 23 Town Council meeting in recognition of their actions during the emergency.

According to police, the children heard cries for help coming from a nearby wooded area and quickly alerted their father. The family located the injured man, identified as Peter Tishler, who had become pinned under a tree while cutting firewood.

Police said Smith used a chainsaw to help free Tishler before emergency responders arrived, an action credited with playing a critical role in saving his life.

Authorities said the family’s quick thinking and teamwork helped turn a potentially tragic situation into a positive outcome.

Tishler, who is recovering, attended the meeting and was present as the awards were presented.

Police praised the family’s actions, calling them an example of bravery and selflessness within the community.
