Family of Lisa McBride releases statement after arrest in decades-old Sussex County homicide

VERNON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — The family of Lisa McBride has released an emotional statement following the arrest and arraignment of a suspect in her 1990 murder, marking a major development in a case that remained unsolved for more than three decades.

On behalf of the family, McBride’s brother, Doug McBride, shared the statement Tuesday, reflecting on the long wait for answers after she disappeared in Vernon Township.

“It has been almost 36 years since our family was told that Lisa never made it to work on June 23, 1990,” the statement reads. “We could never have imagined the horror and pain that would follow. For weeks, then months, then years, and then decades, we have had to live without justice for Lisa, and with so many questions that we thought would never be answered.”

Authorities recently charged Robert William McCaffrey Jr., 54, in connection with McBride’s death. He pleaded not guilty during a court appearance Monday. The case was solved through advances in DNA testing.

“Today, we have the strange and bittersweet news that a suspect has been apprehended and arraigned,” the family said.

McBride, 27, was reported missing from her home in Highland Lakes in June 1990. Her skeletal remains were discovered months later in a wooded area of Sandyston Township. The case remained unsolved until it was reopened with modern forensic technology.

In their statement, the family thanked law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation over the years.

“We would like to thank the Vernon Township Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, and other law enforcement involved for remaining so dedicated to Lisa’s case for 36 years,” the statement reads. “Their perseverance has made this day possible. They have worked tirelessly and with determination, and we are endlessly thankful for their unwavering commitment to solving this crime.”

The family also paid tribute to McBride’s parents, who died before seeing an arrest in the case.

“Norma and George, Lisa’s parents, never lost hope that this day would come. Unfortunately, they are no longer with us, but we know that they are resting a bit easier now,” the statement reads.

They also expressed gratitude to those who contributed information during the investigation.

“We would also like to thank those who have contributed to the investigation. Whether it was a tip, an interview, or being part of a search — thank you,” the statement says. “We know that there are many people out there who knew and loved Lisa dearly. We appreciate all of you and always will.”

Authorities have said the investigation remains ongoing and are continuing to seek additional information. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vernon Township Police Detective Bureau.

“In honor of Lisa and her memory, we’d invite you all to have a drink and dance a bit this evening, and to appreciate each and every day with those that you love,” the family said.
