Man charged with DWI after remaining stopped at intersection in Hunterdon County
CLINTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A Hunterdon County man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop in Clinton Township, police said.
The incident occurred April 18 on Payne Road, where an officer on routine patrol observed a silver Dodge pickup truck stopped at a stop sign for an extended period despite no oncoming traffic. The vehicle was located on the jughandle from Route 31 South to Payne Road, authorities said.
The officer conducted a motor vehicle stop and identified the driver as Leo B. Rodrigues, 24, of Lebanon. Police said the driver showed signs of impairment and was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which were not completed as directed.
Rodrigues was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters for processing. During processing, he agreed to provide breath samples for chemical testing, which showed his blood alcohol concentration exceeded the legal limit, police said.
He was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, obstructing traffic and possession of unsealed cannabis in a motor vehicle. Rodrigues was released to a responsible adult pending a court appearance.
