Hunterdon County sheriff warns residents about jury duty phone scam
HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — The Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement personnel and falsely claim victims failed to appear for a court proceeding.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, multiple residents have reported receiving calls from scammers who claim they missed a hearing where they were expected to testify as an expert witness.
Authorities said the callers tell victims they must immediately pay fines to avoid arrest. In one reported case, a resident was told they owed $10,000 for failure to appear, contempt of court and avoiding a civic duty.
The scammers have used the names of actual sheriff’s officers, and in some cases, caller ID displayed the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office phone number, officials said.
One resident became suspicious and contacted the Sheriff’s Office directly after receiving such a call.
“These scammers are sophisticated and intentionally create fear and urgency to pressure residents into making quick decisions,” said Sheriff Fred Brown. “No legitimate law enforcement agency or court official will ever demand payment over the phone, request gift cards, or threaten immediate arrest for failing to comply. If something feels suspicious, hang up and contact your local police department or our office directly.”
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that legitimate law enforcement agencies and court officials will never demand payment over the phone, request gift cards or seek personal financial information.
Residents who receive similar calls are advised not to respond, provide personal or financial information, click on links or scan QR codes. Officials also recommend deleting suspicious messages and reporting suspected scams to local police.
The Sheriff’s Office urged residents to share information about the scam with family members, friends and neighbors, particularly seniors and other vulnerable individuals who may be targeted by fraudsters.
