Sussex County Library System launches summer programs, reading challenges and USA 250 events
SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — The Sussex County Library System is inviting residents to take advantage of free summer programs, reading challenges and educational events, including activities celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The library system’s summer lineup includes its annual Summer Reading Program, “Unearth a Story,” along with special USA 250 events marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
“Summer is one of the busiest and most exciting times of the year for us at SCLS,” said Will Porter, Library Director. “We look forward to our annual Summer Reading Program, and we’re especially excited to add celebrations of America’s Semiquincentennial to this summer’s offerings.”
The Summer Reading Program encourages participants of all ages to read or listen to books, magazines, graphic novels and other materials to earn raffle tickets for prize drawings.
As part of the program, the library is also hosting its Stomp Out Hunger challenge. Participants can earn stamps by bringing food donations to five participating library branches. Those who collect stamps from all five branches will be entered into a raffle drawing.
Children ages 12 and younger can continue reading through August by participating in the Braen Stone Reading Rocks Program, which rewards readers who complete five books with a prize box. A kickoff event is scheduled for July 31 at Skylands Stadium.
The library’s “Library of Things” collection also offers patrons the opportunity to borrow items beyond books, including fishing poles, citizen science kits, croquet sets, ice cream makers and museum passes.
All summer events and programs are free and open to the public.
Library cards are available to anyone who lives, works or attends school in Sussex County, with the exception of Sparta residents. More information is available through the Sussex County Library System website or at local library branches.
