Readington police warn of phone scam using department’s number

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Readington Township Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam after a resident reported receiving calls from someone posing as a police officer.

According to police, the incident was reported Tuesday, June 30, when a resident received calls from scammers claiming the resident was the victim of identity theft and requesting confirmation of personal information over the phone.

Police said the caller ID displayed the Readington Township Police Department’s phone number, and the caller identified himself as a Readington Township police officer.

The resident became suspicious, ended the call and immediately contacted the police department.

Police are advising anyone who receives similar calls, text messages or emails not to respond, provide personal or financial information, click on links or scan QR codes. Suspected scams should be reported to the Readington Township Police Department.

The department reminded residents that it will never demand payment over the phone, request payment by gift cards or ask for personal financial information.

Police also encouraged residents to share information about the scam with family members, friends and neighbors, particularly older adults and other individuals who may be more vulnerable to fraud.
