Sussex County man charged with DWI after allegedly nearly hitting woman, children in Hackettstown

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Warren County) — An Andover man was charged with driving while intoxicated after police said a witness reported seeing him nearly strike her and her children with a vehicle in Hackettstown.

Hackettstown police responded July 11 to ShopRite Liquors at 80 Main St. for a report of an intoxicated man inside a vehicle with open alcohol containers, according to police.

Officers located Peter Trethewy, 32, of Andover, who allegedly showed signs of impairment, police said.

During the investigation, a witness told officers she had seen Trethewy operating the vehicle and that he nearly struck her and her children as they crossed the street near QuickChek, according to police.

Trethewy was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to chemical testing, reckless driving, operating an unregistered vehicle and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

He was processed and released to a responsible adult pending a mandatory court appearance.
