Sussex County Community College to offer free retirement, genealogy programs in September
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Center for Lifelong Learning at Sussex County Community College will offer two free programs in September focusing on retirement resources and genealogy.
The Center for Lifelong Learning is a collaboration between the Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Senior Services and Sussex County Community College.
The first program, “Ask the Experts: Retirement Resources Panel,” is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, in the atrium of the college’s Performing Arts Center.
The interactive panel will focus on issues people may encounter during retirement, including health care, Medicare, home care, legal planning, housing, finances, caregiving and long-term support.
Panelists will give brief introductions before participating in an open question-and-answer session. Attendees will be able to ask questions and learn about resources available to older adults, retirees and their families.
Panelists include Janeen Brady, an independent insurance agent and owner of Skylands Health Benefits who specializes in Medicare and retirement-related insurance planning; Kathleen Perlett, director of care and community relations for Preferred Care at Home; Tamryn E. Valenzuela, chair of the Trusts & Estates Practice Group at Laddey, Clark & Ryan LLP; and Khushali Trivedi of Vedikh Dynamic Rehab LLC.
A second program, “A Genealogical Odyssey in the Digital Age,” is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, also in the Performing Arts Center atrium.
Carla Zimowsk, owner of AncestorTech LLC, will discuss her experiences researching family history and how technology, including online search tools and artificial intelligence, can be used in genealogical research.
Zimowsk holds a master’s degree in information from Rutgers University and a certificate in genealogical research from Boston University. She spent 25 years supporting technology for historians at Princeton University and has taught about the use of technology in genealogy. Her work has also been published in the Chicago Genealogist.
Additional “Deeper Dive” genealogy topics could be offered virtually following the program.
Both September programs are free, but reservations are required. Light refreshments will be served.
Attendees are asked to park in the lower main parking lot outside the Performing Arts Center. An elevator is available in the building’s lobby for access to the atrium.
