E-bike rider dies after collision with vehicle in Somerset County

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — An e-bike rider died after a collision with a vehicle Saturday afternoon in Franklin Township, according to police.

Officers responded to the intersection of Route 27 and South Middlebush Road at approximately 1:28 p.m. Aug. 15 following a report of a crash involving a motorcycle and a car, according to the Franklin Township Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found an adult man suffering from serious injuries. Emergency medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital responded and transported the man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation determined the man was riding an e-bike south on Route 27 when he collided with a vehicle that was making a left turn from northbound Route 27 onto South Middlebush Road, police said.

Police did not identify the victim or provide information about the driver of the other vehicle.

“Our condolences are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this tragic time,” Public Safety Director Lloyd N. Fredericks said. “With the increased use of e-bikes throughout our community, we urge everyone to slow down, remain alert, and follow the rules of the road. New Jersey has also implemented new requirements for e-bike riders, including licensing and registration requirements, as well as mandatory helmet use. We encourage riders and motorists alike to familiarize themselves with these laws.”

The crash remains under investigation.
