Bicycle mechanical failure leaves Hackettstown man injured
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Warren County) — A 61-year-old Hackettstown man was hospitalized Friday after a mechanical failure on his bicycle caused him to go over the handlebars while riding on Grand Avenue, according to Hackettstown police.
Police and the Hackettstown First Aid & Rescue Squad responded to the 800 block of Grand Avenue at approximately 11:01 a.m. for an initial report of a car versus cyclist.
When officers arrived, they found the man lying face down in the roadway.
An investigation determined that the bicyclist had not been struck by a vehicle. The man went over the handlebars while he was pedaling. A mechanical failure occurred in the bicycle’s rear gear mechanism, causing the rear wheel to lock and the chain to derail from the gears.
He suffered injuries to his face, neck and head and was transported to Hackettstown Medical Center. He was later transferred to Morristown Medical Center.
