Atlantic Health hospitals earn top New Jersey rankings, national honors from Healthgrades
NEW JERSEY — Atlantic Health hospitals have earned numerous national and statewide distinctions for patient care, with Morristown Medical Center receiving more Healthgrades recognitions than any other hospital in the country, according to results announced Tuesday, Oct. 27.
For the third consecutive year, Atlantic Health received the most No. 1 hospital rankings in New Jersey from Healthgrades, an organization that evaluates hospital performance based on patient outcomes.
The 2027 recognitions highlight several hospitals across the health system, including Morristown, Overlook, Hackettstown, Newton, Chilton and CentraState medical centers.
Morristown Medical Center earns seven No. 1 state rankings
Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center was identified as the most recognized hospital nationwide by Healthgrades, receiving dozens of distinctions across multiple medical specialties, including seven No. 1 rankings in New Jersey.
The hospital earned Excellence Awards in Cardiology, Cardiac Care, Cardiac Surgery and Coronary Intervention, along with recognition among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement, Orthopedic Surgery and Stroke Care.
Morristown was also named among America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Outpatient Joint Replacement and Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery.
According to Atlantic Health, Morristown is the only hospital nationwide to receive that particular combination of nine specialty distinctions.
Overlook Medical Center ranks fifth nationally
Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center was named the fifth most recognized hospital in the country by Healthgrades and received five No. 1 rankings in New Jersey for 2027.
Those top state rankings were awarded in Gastrointestinal Surgery, Neurosciences, Pulmonary Care, Stroke Care and Emergency Hospitalization.
Overlook also received national recognition as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Spine Surgery and Stroke Care, as well as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Surgical Care, Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery and Emergency Hospitalization.
Atlantic Health said Overlook is the only hospital in the country to receive that specific combination of national distinctions.
“These outstanding recognitions from Healthgrades are a wonderful celebration of Atlantic Health’s place as a national and regional leader in providing high-quality, innovative and personalized care to our patients,” said Saad Ehtisham, President and Chief Executive Officer, Atlantic Health. “I am proud to congratulate every physician, nurse and team member from across our system who not only make these accomplishments possible, but through their tireless commitment help make Atlantic Health an extraordinary place to provide and receive care.”
Hackettstown, Newton and Chilton hospitals also recognized
Atlantic Health Hackettstown Medical Center was named one of Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care and ranked fourth in New Jersey for Gastrointestinal Surgery.
The Hackettstown hospital also received Excellence Awards in Gastrointestinal Care, Critical Care and Emergency Hospitalization, recognizing its performance across several medical specialties.
Atlantic Health Newton Medical Center earned a place among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care for the fourth consecutive year, covering 2024 through 2027.
Newton also received the Stroke Care Excellence Award for the third consecutive year, from 2025 through 2027, and added a Gastrointestinal Surgery Excellence Award for 2027.
Atlantic Health Chilton Medical Center was named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care for the fifth consecutive year, covering 2023 through 2027.
Chilton ranked fourth in New Jersey for Critical Care and fifth for Gastrointestinal Surgery. The hospital was also recognized among the top 10% of hospitals nationwide for Cardiology Services for the third consecutive year, from 2025 through 2027.
CentraState earns new distinctions
Atlantic Health CentraState Medical Center received two new Healthgrades recognitions for 2027, earning the Outpatient Prostate Care Excellence Award and a Five-Star Rating for Treatment of Heart Failure.
The hospital also repeated its Five-Star Ratings for Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism and Treatment of Sepsis.
Rankings based on patient outcomes
Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance using clinical outcomes rather than surveys or reputation-based assessments.
The organization analyzes risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates across more than 30 common medical conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide.
The methodology is designed to account for differences in patient risk when comparing hospital outcomes. The resulting awards recognize hospitals that meet Healthgrades’ performance criteria in specific specialties and procedures rather than providing a single overall measure of every aspect of hospital care.
“Finding a hospital that excels in a given procedure or treatment can transform a patient’s health trajectory,” said Alana Biggers, MD, MPH, medical advisor at Healthgrades. “We’re proud to recognize Atlantic Health’s hospitals for their top-tier performance in a wide variety of achievement areas and commend its teams for delivering exceptional patient outcomes when it matters most.”
The recognitions reflect the health system’s performance across a range of medical specialties, from cardiac surgery and stroke treatment to critical care, gastrointestinal procedures and emergency hospitalization.
