Mangoes sold at select Walmart stores in New Jersey recalled over possible Salmonella contamination
NEW JERSEY — Panorama Produce is recalling hundreds of boxes of mangoes distributed to select Walmart stores in New Jersey and three other states because of possible Salmonella contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The voluntary recall involves 302 boxes of size 9 mangoes distributed between Aug. 10 and Aug. 21 in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
The recalled mangoes were sold at select Walmart stores, according to the FDA.
The mangoes were packaged in Martina-branded cases. Individual mangoes can be identified by a light blue sticker labeled “Agrofepac” and “Produce of Mexico,” along with PLU number 4584 and UPC 07503061948050.
The recall was initiated after FDA sampling detected Salmonella in mangoes grown on the same farm as the recalled fruit. The mangoes that tested positive were not distributed in U.S. commerce, but because they came from the same source as the recalled mangoes, Panorama Produce initiated the recall.
No illnesses associated with the recalled mangoes have been reported, according to the FDA.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and cause more severe illnesses.
Consumers should check the identifying information on their mangoes to determine whether they are included in the recall. Anyone who has recalled mangoes should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
Consumers who believe they became ill after consuming the product should contact a health care provider.
