New Jersey State Police add more than 100 troopers for Labor Day weekend patrols
NEW JERSEY — New Jersey State Police are increasing patrols on roads and waterways for Labor Day weekend, with more than 100 additional troopers assigned to enforcement details across the state.
The increased traffic enforcement began at 6 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, and will target aggressive driving, speeding, seat belt violations, distracted driving and driving while intoxicated, in addition to regularly scheduled patrols.
State police said three of the six fatal crashes in New Jersey during the 2025 Labor Day holiday period involved drugs or alcohol as a contributing factor.
Motorists who plan to consume alcohol are urged to arrange for a designated driver, use a taxi or rideshare service, or stay where they are rather than drive impaired.
State Police will also increase their presence on New Jersey waterways during the holiday weekend. The Marine Services Bureau will focus on impaired operators, reckless operation of personal watercraft and other powered vessels, and compliance with licensing and onboard safety equipment requirements.
“As summer comes to an unofficial close and many families take advantage of the long weekend to travel or spend time on the water, safety remains our top priority. This Labor Day weekend, more than 100 additional troopers will be on patrol across New Jersey as part of our ongoing efforts to keep our roads and waterways safe,” said Jeanne Hengemuhle, Acting Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “We all have a responsibility to make safe and responsible decisions, whether behind the wheel or operating a vessel. Every fatality is one too many, and our goal is zero. On behalf of the New Jersey State Police, I wish everyone a safe and responsible Labor Day weekend.”
