MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A 21-year-old Budd Lake man was charged with eluding police after allegedly speeding away from an attempted traffic stop on a dirt bike before crashing early Saturday morning, according to police.
Mount Olive police said an officer was on routine patrol on Flanders-Drakestown Road at about 12:28 a.m. Sept. 12 when he observed a motorized dirt bike traveling without a license plate or illuminated taillight.
The officer attempted to stop the dirt bike as it turned onto Wolfe Road, but the driver allegedly accelerated and continued down the road, police said. The officer did not pursue the dirt bike but continued checking the area.
A short time later, police found the dirt bike at Wolfe Road and Kings Arrow Road, where the driver had crashed into the grass along the side of the road.
The driver was identified as Ryan M. Kennedy, 21, of Budd Lake. Kennedy sustained a minor injury and was treated by the Budd Lake First Aid Squad before being taken to Morristown Medical Center for evaluation.
Police said Kennedy was discharged from the hospital at about 9 p.m. that day and reported to police headquarters, where he was arrested without incident.
Kennedy was charged with eluding police with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, operating an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle, failure to maintain lane, operating an ATV on a public street, having no mirrors and operating an ATV without headlights.
He was released pending a court hearing.
