I-280 westbound ramp to I-287 and Route 46 to close overnight Thursday and Friday in Morris County
PARSIPPANY-TROY HILLS, N.J. (Morris County) — The Interstate 280 westbound ramp to Interstate 287 and Route 46 will be closed overnight Thursday and Friday as work continues on a bridge painting project in Parsippany-Troy Hills, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The ramp is scheduled to close from 11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, until 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, and again from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, until 5 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The closures are necessary to allow crews to paint the I-80 eastbound bridge over I-280 and Route 46 as part of a project that began last week.
Motorists traveling on I-280 westbound who normally use the ramp to access Route 46 or I-287 will be directed to follow posted detours.
Detour to Route 46
Drivers on I-280 westbound seeking Route 46 should remain left for I-80 westbound and continue on the I-80 westbound Express lanes. Motorists should then stay right for Exits 42A-B toward Route 202 and Route 46, remain left for Exit 42A toward Route 202 and I-80 eastbound, and cross over I-80 to access the ramp to I-80 eastbound.
From there, drivers should stay right for the Route 202 northbound exit and turn left onto Smith Road to reach Route 46 eastbound or westbound.
Detour to I-287
Motorists traveling on I-280 westbound who need to access I-287 should remain left for I-80 westbound and continue on the I-80 westbound Express lanes. Drivers should stay right for Exits 42A-B toward Route 202 and Route 46, then remain left for Exit 42A toward Route 202 and I-80 eastbound.
After taking Exit 42A and crossing over I-80, motorists should follow the ramp to I-80 eastbound and take Exit 43 for I-287 toward Morristown or Mahwah. Drivers should stay left for I-287 northbound or right for I-287 southbound.
The closures are part of an $8.5 million federally funded project to repaint 10 bridges along I-80 in Morris and Bergen counties. According to NJDOT, preventative bridge maintenance, including painting steel structures, helps protect bridges from corrosion, maintain their condition and extend their operational lifespan.
The department said the exact timing of the work may change because of weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to visit 511nj.org for construction updates and real-time traffic information.
