I-80 left lane closures in both directions to last five days in Morris County beginning Wednesday

MOUNT ARLINGTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — Motorists traveling on Interstate 80 in Morris County should expect delays beginning Wednesday, Nov. 4, as left lane closures are scheduled in both directions for five days while work continues on a bridge replacement project in Mount Arlington, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, a single left lane will be closed on I-80 eastbound and westbound between mileposts 29.8 and 32.3. The closures are scheduled to remain in place until 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9.

NJDOT officials said the closures are necessary to allow concrete connecting the newly constructed bridge decks over Howard Boulevard to cure as work progresses on the I-80 Bridges over Howard Boulevard replacement project.

At least two lanes will remain open on I-80 westbound, while at least three lanes will remain open on I-80 eastbound throughout the closures. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays when traveling through the work zone.

The closures are part of a $65.4 million federally funded project to replace the existing bridges carrying I-80 eastbound and westbound over Howard Boulevard, also known as County Route 516. NJDOT said the bridges are in poor condition and require replacement.

The project includes raising the vertical clearance of both bridges, widening shoulders, extending acceleration and deceleration lanes along I-80 and widening ramps connecting the interstate with Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will also be reconfigured to improve traffic operations.

Additional improvements include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, along with sidewalks and crosswalks that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Sidewalks will also be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and accessibility.

The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.

NJDOT officials said the precise timing of the work is subject to change because of weather or other factors. Motorists can check 511nj.org for construction updates and real-time traffic information.
