AG’s Office releases recordings from Investigation into October 2024 fatal crash in Hunterdon County

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) on Tuesday released 9-1-1 audio, police radio transmissions, and video footage related to a fatal October 18, 2024 crash in Holland Township following an attempted motor vehicle stop.

The decedent was previously identified as Scott Segreaves Jr., 20, of Zuni, Virginia.

The release of the recordings follows a 2019 Attorney General’s policy requiring transparency in investigations of deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement. Representatives of Segreaves’ family were given an opportunity to review the recordings before they were made public.

According to the preliminary investigation, at approximately 10:24 p.m., Segreaves was driving on Water Street in Milford Borough when New Jersey State Police Staff Sgt. Nicholas Pryszlak attempted to catch up to him in connection with a speeding violation. Video showed both vehicles traveling on Frenchtown Road before turning onto Stamets Road, where Sgt. Pryszlak activated his lights and sirens.

Segreaves continued driving and was soon out of sight. About 45 seconds later, Sgt. Pryszlak deactivated his emergency equipment. Continuing along Stamets Road, he asked a passing motorist if a vehicle had gone by; the driver confirmed it had. Sgt. Pryszlak then turned onto Gallmeier Road, where he drove for about a minute and a half.

At 10:28 p.m., Holland Township Police received an automated iPhone crash alert. Using GPS coordinates provided in the call, law enforcement searched the area. At about 10:58 p.m., officers found Segreaves’ vehicle overturned off the side of Stamets Road near Gallmeier Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The recordings can be accessed here.

Under state law, OPIA must investigate any death that occurs during an encounter with law enforcement or while the decedent is in custody. All such cases must be presented to a grand jury to determine whether charges are warranted.

The investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available.
