All St. Luke’s hospitals earn ‘A’ safety grades from Leapfrog Group

The Leapfrog Group has awarded “A” safety grades to all eligible legacy St. Luke’s acute care hospitals in its latest Hospital Safety Grades report.

The national nonprofit healthcare ratings organization recognized 12 St. Luke’s campuses for meeting top patient safety standards, including hospitals in Bethlehem, Allentown, Anderson, Carbon, Easton, Grand View, Monroe, Miners, Sacred Heart, Upper Bucks and Warren, along with Geisinger St. Luke’s Hospital.

The grades are issued twice annually and evaluate hospitals on their ability to prevent medical errors, infections and other patient harms.

“St. Luke’s did it again – straight A’s!” said Donna Sabol, St. Luke’s Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer. “St. Luke’s record is so impressive because our doctors, nurses and other caregivers are so committed to our Network’s mission to deliver the very best care to patients.”

According to Leapfrog, the Hospital Safety Grade is the only national ratings program focused exclusively on hospital safety and preventing avoidable injuries and infections. The grading system uses 30 publicly available safety measures to evaluate nearly 3,000 hospitals nationwide.

St. Luke’s said the latest grades add to other recent national recognitions received by the health network.

The health system noted that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ranked St. Luke’s as the nation’s top health system for quality, safety and patient experience last fall.

St. Luke’s also said it remains the only health network in the greater Lehigh Valley region recognized on the 100 Top Hospitals list for 12 consecutive years and 14 years overall, as well as the only regional network to earn comprehensive five-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

“Straight A’s and five stars – St. Luke’s is the only health network in Lehigh Valley to ever receive such high marks from both Leapfrog and CMS,” Sabol noted.
