Attorney General Platkin names Michael C. Walters as director of New Jersey Division of Law
TRENTON, N.J. — Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced Friday that Michael C. Walters, who has served as acting director of the Division of Law (DOL) since December 2024, has officially been appointed as director, effective immediately.
“Mike has focused on public service law for his entire career, and I can think of no better person to continue steering the Division and demanding accountability on behalf of New Jerseyans in the years ahead,” said Attorney General Platkin. “His dedication and integrity set a standard for both our newest employees and our veteran deputy attorneys general, and I am pleased he will continue leading our civil practice, which has grown significantly and achieved amazing results during his tenure.”
Walters, who joined the Division of Law in 1999, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving in the role.
“I want to thank Attorney General Platkin for trusting me to continue this important work,” Walters said. “Working for New Jersey in this capacity is an honor and I am so pleased to be supported every day by a fantastic team of professionals throughout DOL.”
Over the past year, the Division of Law has recorded numerous victories for the State of New Jersey in areas including the environment, labor, consumer fraud, civil rights, antitrust, and government fraud.
Before being appointed acting director, Walters served as deputy director overseeing the Litigation Practice Group, where he managed litigation strategies for defending the state, its agencies, and current and former employees. Earlier in his career, he was a section chief and line deputy in the Division’s Education and Higher Education Section. Walters is a 1998 graduate of Rutgers School of Law and previously clerked for the Honorable Myron H. Gottlieb, J.S.C.
The Division of Law, which employs more than 500 attorneys, provides legal advice and representation to dozens of executive branch agencies on matters involving banking, insurance, child protection, civil rights, consumer protection, corrections, education, the environment, finance, health, taxation, transportation, and the state budget.
