Bill to modernize construction payments advances

NEW JERSEY – The Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee voted in favor of legislation sponsored by Senator Owen Henry (R-12) that would modernize how construction-related fees are paid to local governments.

“Modernizing our payment systems is just common sense. By requiring municipalities to accept electronic payments for construction-related fees, this bill would provide more flexible payment options for contractors and reduce their administrative burden,” said Henry. “This is a simple, yet efficient way to improve government operations and support our construction industry.”

Currently, municipalities are authorized, but not required to, establish a card payment system or electronic funds transfer system to receive payment from construction contractors for taxes, fees, assessments, fines, or other obligations and charges.

Sen. Henry’s bill, S3323/A4436, would require local governments to accept electronic payments from construction contractors.
