Blairstown police warn of new phone scam targeting residents
BLAIRSTOWN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) — Police in Blairstown are warning residents about a new phone scam in which callers pose as fraud department representatives in an attempt to steal personal information.
Authorities said the scam begins with a text message. If the recipient replies “NO,” a scammer then calls back, pretending to be from a company’s fraud department. The caller asks for personal information to “verify” the recipient’s identity and may claim they will help set up a temporary card in Apple Wallet to gain access to the victim’s account.
Police reminded residents that legitimate companies will not demand sensitive information over the phone. Instead, officials advised residents to hang up and call the company back using a verified phone number to ensure they are speaking with a true representative.
