Cash before the gas: Wawa makes New Jersey drivers pay upfront at the pump

NEW JERSEY — Wawa has implemented a new fuel payment policy at its New Jersey stores, requiring customers to pay before fuel is dispensed.

Effective June 2, all fuel purchases — including those made with cash, credit cards, debit cards, and gift cards — must be paid directly to the fuel attendant at the pump prior to receiving fuel. The updated policy is intended to create a more secure and efficient transaction process for both customers and associates.

According to Wawa officials, this change brings New Jersey locations in line with fuel purchasing procedures already in place across the company’s other markets.

Customers who use the Wawa App for fuel transactions can continue doing so as they have in the past.

The company says the move supports a consistent customer experience across all its stores while enhancing transaction security.
