Cause of Sussex County house fire under investigation

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – The Sussex County Fire Marshal’s Office and Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the cause of a fire at a house on Halsted Street in Newton, according to the Newton Fire Department.

On Saturday, March 30, at 10:47 a.m., the Newton Fire Department responded to a residence on Halsted Street for a possible electrical fire, officials said.

Newton Fire Chief observed a smoke condition and upgraded the assignment to a working structure fire with possible entrapment, authorities said.

The fire chief made entry to the structure in efforts to locate a trapped victim but was unable to locate a victim due to advancing fire conditions. The fire was later downgraded to no entrapment after confirmation that all occupants were out of the structure, officials said.

All interior fire crews were eventually pulled from their interior operations and moved to defensive exterior operations due to multiple collapses and explosions, authorities said.

Aerials were utilized to knock the bulk of the fire and once the fire was placed under control, crews were able to commence overhaul operations, officials said.

Fire crews operated on scene for approximately 3 hours and there were no reports of injuries, authorities said.

The Reed Cross was helping 11 people with emergency assistance for things like temporary lodging, food, clothing and other immediate needs.
