Driver charged with DWI after striking utility pole in Morris County

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A Morris County man has been charged with DWI, among other offenses, after hitting a utility pole in Mount Olive Township on Sunday night, according to police.

On October 27, at around 10:04 p.m., an officer responded to a report of a Jeep Wrangler that had collided with a utility pole on Hillside Avenue. Upon arrival, the officer found the driver, identified as Mario Fontanez III, 23, of Netcong Borough, still seated in the vehicle, police said.

As the officer spoke to Fontanez, he allegedly detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage and noted that Fontanez appeared to be impaired, police said.

Fontanez was transported to Hackettstown Medical Center (HMC) for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

While at the hospital, he was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, failure to wear a seatbelt, and failure to produce proof of insurance. Fontanez was left in the care of HMC staff pending a court appearance, police said.
