
Driver rescued after dump truck overturns on Route 15 off-ramp in Sussex County
SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – The driver of a dump truck was trapped and injured when the vehicle overturned and crashed in Sparta Township Wednesday morning, according to police.
The crash happened at around 8:20 a.m. on the Route 15 northbound off-ramp leading onto Route 517, also known as Sparta Junction, police said.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found the driver trapped inside the dump truck. Fire crews successfully extricated the individual from the wreckage. Due to the extent of the injuries sustained, the driver was flown by Atlantic Medivac to Morristown Medical Center for further treatment, police said.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. The Sparta Police Department’s Traffic Bureau, along with the New Jersey State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit, remains on scene conducting measurements and working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, police said.
Initial observations revealed no signs of impairment, and no behavior at the scene indicated that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Authorities confirmed that the driver was properly licensed to operate the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The Sparta Police Department expressed gratitude to the fire department and emergency medical personnel for their prompt and professional response.
