Driver trapped in vehicle after live wires fell during high winds in Hunterdon County

WEST AMWELL TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A driver was briefly trapped inside a vehicle Sunday afternoon after live power lines came down on top of it during strong winds in West Amwell Township, according to the West Amwell Fire Company.

Crews were called to George Washington Road around 12:25 p.m. for a report of downed wires on an occupied vehicle. Responding firefighters confirmed one person was inside but not injured, with live electrical lines draped over the car.

Police established phone contact with the driver and instructed them to remain inside — the safest option when live wires are involved.

JCP&L was notified and arrived within about 45 minutes to secure power so firefighters could safely assist.

The fire company urged residents to use caution around trees and power lines during periods of high winds. “With the strong winds today, exercise caution when near trees,” officials said.
