Former employee charged in $46K business fraud case in Morris County

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A Sussex County woman has been charged in connection with more than $46,000 in fraudulent transactions involving a business account, police said.

The investigation began Feb. 2, when a victim reported unauthorized activity tied to her business accounts at police headquarters. The victim told officers that a fraudulent Venmo account and credit card had been opened in the business’s name.

Police said the unauthorized transactions totaled $46,137.83.

During the investigation, authorities identified a former employee, Valerie A. Vanhorn, 42, of Hamburg Borough, as the person responsible for the activity.

Vanhorn surrendered at police headquarters on April 20 and was arrested without incident, police said.

She was charged with theft by deception, fraudulent use of a credit card and forgery. Vanhorn was released pending a court appearance.
