Franklin Borough police warn residents of rising scams

FRANKLIN BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Franklin Borough Police Department is alerting residents about a rise in scams targeting the community and urging people to remain vigilant.

Among the latest scams reported are AI voice cloning schemes, in which scammers use advanced technology to mimic the voices of loved ones and claim to be in an emergency while asking for money. Police advise verifying the caller by contacting the person directly.

Other scams include fake tax refund offers sent by text or email, fraudulent calls from impostors posing as utility companies demanding immediate payment, cryptocurrency investment schemes promising guaranteed returns, and phishing messages claiming to be from banks, delivery companies, or online retailers.

To stay safe, police recommend avoiding sharing personal or financial information with unknown callers or websites, using strong passwords with two-factor authentication, and verifying suspicious messages through official sources.

Residents who suspect a scam or have questions can call the Franklin Borough Police Department at (973) 827-7700 or contact the Federal Trade Commission. In emergencies, dial 9-1-1.

Police also encourage residents to share this information with friends and family to help prevent others from falling victim.
