Hopatcong police promote veteran officer David Kraus to sergeant

HOPATCONG BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Hopatcong Police Department has promoted longtime officer David Kraus to the rank of sergeant, recognizing more than two decades of service to the community.

Kraus, a 26-year veteran of the department, has built a career marked by professionalism and a wide range of specialized roles, officials said.

During his time in the patrol division, Kraus served as a field training officer, emergency medical technician, accident reconstructionist and drug recognition expert. He was known as one of the department’s most proactive officers, according to officials.

In 2017, Kraus was assigned to the Detective Bureau, where he became an arson investigator and worked closely with the Sussex County Guns, Gangs and Narcotics Task Force.

Throughout his career, Kraus has received multiple honors, including Life Saving Awards, the Exceptional Service Award, several Mothers Against Drunk Driving awards, two Chief’s Awards and the Law Enforcement Award from the New Jersey State Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association.

In addition to his law enforcement duties, Kraus has been active in the Policemen’s Benevolent Association, serving as both a delegate and president for much of his career.
