Sussex County Library System to host USA 250 programs marking nation’s 250th anniversary

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Sussex County Library System is inviting residents to take part in a series of programs commemorating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

The USA 250 events, scheduled throughout the year, will feature educational presentations, interactive activities and family-friendly programming focused on American history, culture and the nation’s founding.

Library officials said the programs are designed to engage participants of all ages while encouraging reflection on the country’s past and future.

Among the April offerings is “Revolutionary War Transcription for Teens,” a virtual program scheduled for 5 p.m. April 7. The session will guide participants in working with the National Archives to transcribe historical documents as part of a citizen science effort.

Another program, “The Whippany Burying Yard: 300 Years of History,” will be held at 1 p.m. April 18 at the Main Library, 125 Morris Turnpike in Newton. The presentation will be led by Hanover Township Landmark Commission Chairperson Michael Czuchnicki and will explore the history of the burial ground established in 1718.

Officials said additional events, resources and information related to the nation’s semiquincentennial are available on the library system’s USA 250 webpage.

All programs are free and open to the public.
