Gottheimer speaks at congressional Seder highlighting Sarajevo Haggadah, interfaith unity

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer joined lawmakers, international officials and congressional staff at a bipartisan Seder in Washington ahead of Passover, emphasizing themes of unity, resilience and shared responsibility.

The event brought together members of Congress with Bosnian leaders, including Denis Bećirović, chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with diplomats and staff. The gathering focused on the universal messages of Passover, including liberation, remembrance and standing against oppression.

Central to the program was the Sarajevo Haggadah, a historic Jewish text that has survived centuries of conflict and was protected by people of different faiths during periods of violence. Organizers said the Haggadah symbolizes interfaith cooperation and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.

“As we gather ahead of Passover, we’re reminded that this is not just a Jewish story—it’s a human story about freedom, resilience, and our responsibility to stand up for one another. The Sarajevo Haggadah is a powerful symbol of that truth,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “Across centuries of persecution and conflict, people of different faiths risked everything to protect it—not because it was theirs, but because it was worth protecting.”

Gottheimer continued, “In a world that too often feels divided, that lesson couldn’t be more urgent. We must stand shoulder to shoulder against hate and defend the dignity of every community. That’s not partisan, that’s who we are at our best.”

Officials said the Seder served as both an educational and cultural event, reinforcing bipartisan support for interfaith dialogue and cooperation.

Attendees included Bosnia and Herzegovina Foreign Affairs Minister Elmedin Konaković, Ambassador to the United States Sven Alkalaj and United Nations Ambassador Dr. Zlatko Lagumdžija. Organizers said the event highlighted the importance of global partnerships in promoting tolerance and protecting human rights.
