Hunterdon County commissioners honor Girl Scout troop for Bronze Award project at Morales Preserve

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners has honored Junior Girl Scout Troop 80744 for earning the Bronze Award after completing a community project at the Bernadette Morales Nature Preserve in Raritan Township.

During Tuesday’s meeting, commissioners presented proclamations to troop members recognizing their service and contributions. Commissioner Director John E. Lanza praised the scouts for their initiative.

“The members of Troop 80744 have shown that leadership starts early,” Lanza said. “Through teamwork and a true commitment to community, these scouts have made a lasting impact that residents will enjoy for years to come.”

The Bronze Award is the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can earn, requiring teamwork on a sustainable project that addresses a community need. Troop 80744 enhanced the preserve’s outdoor classroom by hand-painting colorful benches and installed “clipper boxes” with pruning shears for hikers to use in maintaining trails.

The clippers were donated by Home Depot and Lowe’s and funded in part by Girl Scout cookie sales. The troop chose the 52-acre preserve, which has been part of the Flemington community since 1972, for its natural beauty and community value.

In addition to their completed projects, the scouts are continuing their work at the preserve by painting the bridge to further enhance the park for visitors.
