Hunterdon County Deputy Director Van Doren participates in U.S. Marine Corps retired flag burning ceremony

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County Commissioner Deputy Director Shaun C. Van Doren participated in the U.S. Marine Corps Bulldogs Retired Flag Burning Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 3, at the Hunterdon County Emergency Services Training Center.

The official ceremony, held twice a year by the Bulldogs, provides a dignified retirement for American flags that have become worn or unserviceable. Local veterans, first responders, and community members gathered to pay tribute to the nation’s symbol and reflect on the values it represents.

“It is truly inspiring to witness the respect and reverence shown here tonight,” Van Doren said. “The American flag represents the freedom, sacrifice, and unity that define our country, and the Bulldogs’ commitment to retiring it with honor reflects the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the American spirit.”

The U.S. Marine Corps Bulldogs have long been active in the Hunterdon County community, supporting veterans’ initiatives, youth programs, and patriotic observances. Their flag retirement ceremonies continue to promote civic pride and underscore the importance of respecting national symbols.

To support this effort, Hunterdon County residents can properly dispose of worn American flags year-round at the following drop-off locations:

  • Hunterdon County Clerk’s Office, 71 Main Street, Flemington
  • Hunterdon County Library Headquarters, 314 State Route 12, Raritan Township
  • Hunterdon County Veterans Services Office, 4 Gauntt Place, Building #3, Flemington
  • Local American Legion and VFW posts throughout the county

Van Doren extended his gratitude on behalf of the County Commissioners to the Bulldogs and all participants for their continued dedication to honoring this proud tradition.
