Hunterdon County officials join ShopRite for ‘Help Bag Hunger Day’
RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County officials rolled up their sleeves Friday, Sept. 19, to help bag groceries and raise awareness for food insecurity during the annual “Help Bag Hunger Day” at the Flemington ShopRite.
Commissioner Director John E. Lanza was joined by Deputy Director Shaun C. Van Doren, Commissioner Jeff Kuhl, Sheriff Fred Brown, and County Clerk Mary Melfi for the event, which is part of ShopRite’s Partners in Caring initiative during National Hunger Action Month.
“Hunger continues to affect families right here in Hunterdon County. Today’s turnout shows the strength and compassion of our community,” Lanza said. “We are proud to support ShopRite’s Partners in Caring initiative and to lend a hand — and a few bagging skills — to help make a difference.”
The initiative partners with local organizations to fight hunger across the region, encouraging shoppers to donate to local food banks in denominations of $1, $3 or $5. Volunteers and community leaders bagged groceries, interacted with shoppers, and spread the word about the need to support families in crisis.
Deputy Director Van Doren praised the turnout, saying, “Events like ‘Help Bag Hunger Day’ remind us that local government has a vital role to play in supporting the most vulnerable members of our community. It’s inspiring to see so many residents, volunteers, and organizations come together with a shared purpose to fight hunger and give back.”
The event was made possible through the support of the Colalillo family, owners of the Flemington ShopRite, whose continued leadership in the Partners in Caring program has contributed to ongoing efforts to address food insecurity.
