Hunterdon County proclaims May as Mental Health Awareness Month

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed May 2026 as Mental Health Awareness Month, reaffirming the county’s commitment to promoting mental health education, awareness and support services.

County officials said the proclamation recognizes the work of the Hunterdon County Mental Health Board and its Stigma-Free Taskforce in supporting individuals and families affected by mental health conditions.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than one in five adults in the United States experiences mental illness.

Officials said the proclamation highlights the importance of addressing stigma, which remains a significant barrier preventing people from seeking mental health care and support.

Hunterdon County officials noted that all 26 municipalities in the county have pledged to become Stigma-Free communities.

During the commissioners meeting, Susan Nekola spoke about the importance of encouraging open conversations surrounding mental health and reducing isolation for those facing challenges.

Deputy Director Jeff Kuhl also addressed the importance of community support and access to care.

“Creating a stigma-free community means making sure every resident knows they are not alone and that support is available. We are proud to stand with our partners and residents in promoting awareness and access to care throughout Hunterdon County,” Kuhl said.

County commissioners encouraged residents to participate in Mental Health Awareness Month by learning about available resources, supporting others and continuing efforts to promote open discussions about mental health.
