I-78 eastbound lane closures Friday night for traffic shift

BETHLEHEM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Two lanes on I-78 westbound are scheduled to be closed Wednesday night as a rockfall mitigation project advances in Bethlehem Township.

In addition, two lanes on I-78 eastbound are scheduled to be closed Friday night.

I-78 westbound lane closures tonight, Thursday, Sept. 12

Beginning at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 until 5:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, two lanes on I-78 westbound are scheduled to be closed between milepost 10.5 and milepost 9.9. The closures are necessary to remove construction barrier and repave the right shoulder, as well as restripe the lanes.

At least one lane will be maintained on I-78 westbound during construction.

By 5:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, I-78 westbound traffic will be shifted to the right to create a median work zone. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays or plan an alternate route.

I-78 eastbound lane closures tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 13

Beginning at 8:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 until 5:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, two lanes on I-78 eastbound are scheduled to be closed between milepost 9.9 and milepost 10.5. The closures are necessary to remove construction barrier and repave the right shoulder, as well as restripe the lanes.

At least one lane will be maintained on I-78 eastbound during construction.

By 5:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, I-78 eastbound traffic will be shifted to the right to create a median work zone. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays or plan an alternate route.

The $29.8 million federally-funded project will mitigate rockfall hazards along a section of I-78 eastbound and westbound between milepost 9.96 and milepost 10.55. It includes rock scaling to cut back the slope and excavation to widen the catch area to prevent rocks from potentially reaching the highway. In addition, there will be drainage improvements. The project is anticipated to be complete in 2025.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
