I-80 westbound ramp from Howard Boulevard to be closed and detoured for 10 days in Mount Arlington Borough

Truck Rest Area on I-80 westbound to be closed next Friday, May 17

MOUNT ARLINGTON BOROUGH, NJ (Morris County) – The I-80 westbound ramp from Howard Boulevard is closed and detoured for 10 days as the I-80 bridges over Howard Boulevard bridge replacement project advances in Mount Arlington Borough.

In addition, the Truck Rest Area on I-80 westbound will be closed beginning next Friday, May 17.

The Howard Boulevard ramp to I-80 westbound was closed at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10 for repairs and will reopen on Monday, May 20 at 8:00 p.m. If work is completed earlier, the ramp will reopen sooner.

Howard Boulevard northbound ramp to I-80 westbound Detour:

  • Motorists on Howard Boulevard northbound wishing to take the ramp to I-80 westbound will be directed to turn right to take the ramp to I-80 eastbound, which is before the ramp to I-80 westbound
  • Take Exit 34 to Route 15/Warton/Dover/Sparta
  • Stay right to merge onto North Main Street/CR 634
  • Stay left to continue towards Route 15 southbound/I-80/Dover
  • Turn right onto Route 15 southbound
  • Keep right to take the first ramp to I-80 westbound/Delaware Water Gap

Howard Boulevard southbound ramp to I-80 westbound Detour:

  • Motorists on Howard Boulevard southbound wishing to take the ramp to I-80 westbound will be directed to continue on Howard Boulevard southbound
  • Turn right onto Route 46 westbound
  • Stay right to continue on Route 46 westbound
  • Stay right to take the ramp to I-80/Lake Hopatcong Landing
  • Stay left to continue on Ledgewood Road
  • Stay left to take the ramp to I-80 westbound

In addition, beginning at 8 p.m. next Friday, May 17, the Truck Rest Area on I-80 westbound at mile post 32.3, just before Exit 30 to Howard Boulevard/Mount Arlington, will be closed for 10 days. The closure is necessary for repaving NJDOT will provide advanced notice before this work takes place.

The $65.4 million federally funded project will replace the existing bridges carrying I-80 eastbound and I-80 westbound over Howard Boulevard/CR 516, which are in poor condition.

Improvements will include raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening the shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80, and widening the ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will be reconfigured to improve operational performance.

The project will also include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, and ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station for improved pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility.

The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
