I-80 westbound ramp to Howard Boulevard reopens as bridge replacement project progresses

MOUNT ARLINGTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — The Interstate 80 westbound Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard reopened around 1 p.m. Friday after crews completed reconstruction and drainage improvements, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced.

The ramp, which closed on Oct. 31 for the work, is part of a larger $65.4 million federally funded project to replace the deteriorating eastbound and westbound I-80 bridges over Howard Boulevard/County Route 516. Both structures are in poor condition, officials said.

The improvement project includes raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80, and widening the ramps connecting to Howard Boulevard. The intersection beneath the bridges will also be reconfigured to improve traffic flow.

Additional upgrades will include new traffic signals, improved lighting and ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.

DOT officials cautioned that construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check 511nj.org for real-time travel information and project updates.
