Linda Claire Callahan, nurse and wife of retired N.J. State Police Superintendent Pat Callahan, dies at 57

WARREN COUNTY, N.J. – Linda Claire Callahan, a devoted nurse, humanitarian and mother whose life was defined by faith, service and compassion for others, died at home on Monday surrounded by her family. She was 57.

Callahan, a Mount Olive High School graduate, earned an associate degree in nursing from the County College of Morris and spent her career as a registered nurse caring for those in need. Her commitment to service extended far beyond her profession. A devout Christian, she volunteered on mission trips to Haiti, Appalachia, Philadelphia and other communities, quietly offering help wherever it was needed.

In a statement, Gov. Phil Murphy remembered Callahan for her faith, service and compassion.

“Tammy and I are heartbroken by the passing of Linda Callahan,” Murphy said. “Linda and her husband, recently retired New Jersey State Police Superintendent Colonel Pat Callahan, devoted more than three decades to serving the people of our state — and in that time, they became dear friends to us and to so many across New Jersey.”

Callahan was married to her high school sweetheart, Patrick Callahan, the recently retired superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. His retirement became effective Dec. 31, 2025.

“A woman of deep faith and enduring strength, Linda upheld her values every day,” Murphy said. “After surviving the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, she drew from her experience to take meaningful action — raising awareness and building upon her lifelong commitment to volunteerism. She deeply believed in helping those in need and worked tirelessly to make the world more compassionate and just.”

Callahan was the daughter of Robert and Blanche Wonderly and the sister of Ann Bisnath. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Patrick Callahan, and was the mother of four children: Steven, Cassidy, Ryan and Carrie Ann. She also cherished her role as “Lolly” to her four grandchildren — Brooks, Madison, Shaelynn and Caden.

An avid gardener, Callahan found peace in nurturing plants, a reflection of the care and patience she showed to people throughout her life. Family members said her garden mirrored her spirit — attentive, gentle and full of beauty.

Linda Callahan will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her servant’s heart and her dedication to her family and community. “She will be missed by everyone whose life she touched,” Murphy said.

A memorial visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 15, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High St., Hackettstown. A Christian funeral service is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 213 Main St., Hackettstown.
