Man, 66, found guilty of sexually assaulting child in Warren County

BELVIDERE, NJ (Warren County) – A Warren County man was convicted Thursday of sexually assaulting a child in Phillipsburg, according to the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.

A Warren County jury found Joseph Gares, 66 of Phillipsburg guilty of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree criminal attempted aggravated sexual assault, four counts of second-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree lewdness, and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

The jury found Gares not guilty of one count of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, authorities said.

The sexual acts occurred in 2012 through 2016 when the victim was between the ages of 8 and 11, officials said.

Gares is tentatively scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 30.

At sentencing, Gares faces a sentence of 25 years to Life in New Jersey State Prison, subject to the Jessica Lunsford Act. He will also be subject to registration pursuant to Megan’s Law and Parole Supervision for Life.
