Man accused of assaulting police, EMS in Sussex County
BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A man was charged earlier this month after police said he assaulted police and EMS in Byram Township.
On March 14, police responded to a residence on South Shore Road for a male allegedly trespassing. It was reported that the man, who was later identified as Richard M. Zeifert of both Staten Island, NY and Byram Township, had walked onto another’s property, entered their vehicle, and appeared to be under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, police said.
Upon arrival, officers located Zeifert in the rear of the homeowner’s vehicle. It was determined that he was under the influence and an ambulance was requested. Lakeland Emergency Squad responded and assisted officers, police said.
While treating Zeifert, he became combative, punching and kicking at officers and Lakeland Emergency Squad members, police said.
Zeifert resisted officers commands and made threating comments. He was restrained and then transported to Newton Medical Center, police said.
Zeifert was charged on March 19 with disorderly conduct, trespassing, third-degree assault on a police officer or public employee, under the influence of CDS, and resisting arrest. He was then released pending a court appearance, police said.
