Man accused of driving nearly 90 mph at time of deadly Morris County crash facing reckless vehicular homicide charge
ROXBURY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – An Essex County man is facing a reckless vehicular homicide charge after a deadly crash in Morris County, according to Morris County Acting Prosecutor Maggie Calderwood.
The crash happened on Friday, May 31, at around 10:30 p.m. on Howard Boulevard in Roxbury Township, Calderwood said.
The investigation revealed that a northbound 2021 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Gerald Veneziano, 41, of Belleville, collided with a southbound 2019 Mazda 3, driven by Jacob Davis, 19, of Flanders, Calderwood said.
Davis was pronounced dead at the scene, Calderwood said.
Veneziano was extricated and transported to Morristown Medical Center with serious internal injuries, Calderwood said.
Numerous open alcohol containers were allegedly found in the vicinity of the Silverado and a subsequent investigation revealed the Silverado was traveling at approximately 90 mph at the time of the collision, Calderwood said.
Veneziano was charged on June 21 with second-degree reckless vehicular homicide and numerous motor vehicle offenses, Calderwood said.
Pursuant to the Criminal Justice Reform Act, Veneziano has been released from the Morris County Correctional Facility on a series of non-monetary bail conditions including surrender of his driver’s license and submission to alcohol testing, Calderwood said.
The next scheduled court appearance is a Pre-Indictment Conference on July 29 before the Hon. Judge Claudia R. Jones, J.S.C., Calderwood said.
The investigation was conducted by the Roxbury Township Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit.
