Man arrested days after leading police on chase, crashing, fleeing on foot in Warren County
INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – A Sussex County man was arrested days after he allegedly led an Independence Township police officer on a chase, crashing into a tree in Hackettstown, and then fleeing on foot, according to the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.
On Aug. 19 an officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 46 in Independence Township. The vehicle was then observed passing vehicles and driving in a reckless manner, authorities said.
The officer activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle refused to stop and continued east on Route 46 in Hackettstown, the prosecutor’s office said.
The officer pursued the vehicle for a short distance in Hackettstown before the vehicle crashed into a tree on Cook Street. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot and was unable to be located, authorities said.
Through a police investigation it was determined that Jeffrey Bissonnette, 52, of Andover was operating the vehicle at the time the officer attempted to make the motor vehicle stop, the prosecutor’s office said.
Bissonnette was located and charged on Aug. 29 with third-degree eluding and then lodged in the Warren County Jail pending a detention hearing
