Man charged with possession of toxic inhalant after Route 23 stop in Sussex County

FRANKLIN BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) —  Police this week announced the arrest of a Wantage man who was charged in August after officers discovered a large canister of flavored nitrous oxide during a traffic stop on Route 23 in Franklin Borough.

According to police, Jesse Rottenstein, 23, of Wantage, was stopped by Officer Dylan Testa on Aug. 16 for several motor vehicle violations, including driving with a suspended license. Officer Jonathan Sienkiewicz and Sgt. Robert Vander Ploeg assisted at the scene.

Police said officers observed the nitrous oxide canister on the passenger-side floor of the vehicle. The substance, commonly inhaled or “huffed” to cause intoxication, led to Rottenstein being charged with possession of toxic chemicals, a disorderly persons offense.

He was also issued multiple motor vehicle summonses and released pending his appearance in Franklin Borough Municipal Court, in accordance with the New Jersey Bail Reform Act.
