Man sentenced to 50 years for 2023 Somerset County homicide

SOMERVILLE, NJ (Somerset County) – A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to 50 years in New Jersey State Prison for the 2023 murder of a Franklin Township resident during a robbery that involved a large quantity of marijuana.

Daniel Matthews, 45, was convicted by a jury in March of first-degree murder and several related charges in connection with the death of Artis Timothy Young, 46, of Franklin Township. On Thursday, April 24, 2025, Matthews was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Angela F. Borkowski to 50 years in prison, with 42.5 years to be served without the possibility of parole under the No Early Release Act. Additional sentences for related charges will run concurrently.

The case stemmed from a missing persons report filed on December 30, 2023, after Young failed to return home. Investigators learned he had planned to meet with Matthews the night before. That same day, Young’s body was discovered in Brooklyn, New York. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death was ligature strangulation and ruled it a homicide.

Evidence presented at trial revealed that Matthews and an accomplice, Andrew Mumby, murdered Young at Matthews’ family residence in Franklin Township during a robbery. The pair then transported Young’s body in the trunk of his own vehicle to Brooklyn, where it was abandoned. Surveillance video, cellphone records, and forensic evidence—including the victim’s blood found on Matthews’ clothing and at the scene—tied Matthews to the killing and the disposal of the body.

Mumby has since pleaded guilty to his role in the crime.

Matthews was convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, conspiracy to disturb human remains, disturbing human remains, and two counts of hindering apprehension. The case was prosecuted by Somerset County Assistant Prosecutors William A. Guhl and Terence Ford, with support from the Franklin Township Police Department, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, NYPD, New Jersey State Police, and the FBI.
