Memorial service to honor fallen firefighters set for May 1 in Sussex County

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Sussex County Community College Public Safety Training Academy will host a memorial service May 1 to honor firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

The ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the academy, located at 114 Morris Turnpike in Hampton Township, and is open to the public.

The event is part of the national “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters” initiative, launched in 2017 by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The observance, held during National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, encourages communities to illuminate homes and buildings in red as a tribute.

Organizers said the ceremony will include a special tribute to Captain Sardina III of the Hopatcong Fire Department while honoring all fallen firefighters.

Community members, local organizations and fire departments are encouraged to participate in the Light the Night observance by displaying red lights throughout the weekend.

Officials said the memorial aims to recognize the bravery, dedication and sacrifice of firefighters and to bring the community together in remembrance.
