Morris County Crime Stoppers offering reward for identity of suspect in ‘grandparent scam’
MORRIS PLAINS BOROUGH, NJ (Morris County) – The Morris Plains Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance with identifying an individual allegedly responsible for a grandparent scam, where the suspect received $6,000 cash from the victim.
On Monday, March 27, an unknown person called the victim pretending to be a lawyer. The caller advised the victim that her grandson was currently in police custody following a serious motor vehicle crash and a payment was needed for his release, authorities said.
The caller continued by saying that her grandson was in serious condition, as well as the woman who he hit. The caller needed $15,000 to have her grandson released and arranged to have a courier pick up the funds, authorities said.
The victim did not have the $15,000 but came up with $6,000 to have her grandson released, authorities said.
Following the phone call, the pictured suspect, known only as “George”, arrived in a gray SUV and picked up the cash before driving away, authorities said.
