Morris County sheriff urges safe, legal fireworks use during celebrations
MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. — Sheriff James M. Gannon and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office are reminding residents to celebrate responsibly during fireworks events and holidays.
Officials emphasize the importance of never using fireworks while impaired and closely supervising children, especially when using sparklers, which burn at extremely high temperatures.
Legal consumer fireworks permitted in New Jersey include ground displays that emit sparks, smoke bombs, and sparklers, but commercial-grade fireworks—intended only for professional displays—should never be handled by the public due to their multiple explosive charges and potential for serious injury or death.
If commercial-grade fireworks are found during an event, residents are urged to isolate the area, notify the fireworks display manager, and never assume the device is a dud. The Morris County Bomb Squad should be contacted if such fireworks are discovered at any other time.
Illegal consumer fireworks, such as aerial rockets, firecrackers, and any fireworks that explode, remain prohibited under state and federal law.
The Morris County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad provides 24-hour technical assistance on explosives-related incidents. Residents with questions or concerns can contact the Morris County Communications Center at 973-285-2900.
