New Hope-Lambertville Bridge to close to vehicular traffic overnight, November 18–21

Periodic Delays Possible on Temporary Pedestrian Walkway; Travel Restrictions Needed for Removal of Overhead Containment Structure and Installation of Upstream Guide Rails

LAMBERTVILLE, NJ (Hunterdon County) – The New Hope-Lambertville Toll-Supported Bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic during overnight hours from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on the nights of Tuesday, Nov. 18, to Thursday, Nov. 21, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) announced Wednesday.

The overnight closures are necessary so that work crews can safely remove the temporary overhead containment structure on the bridge. Additionally, the closures will allow crews to install newly rehabilitated guide rails along the bridge’s upstream travel lanes.

The bridge has been undergoing a comprehensive rehabilitation project throughout much of this year. As part of the project, a New Jersey-bound traffic detour has been in place since late January, and pedestrian crossings have been restricted to a temporary walkway on the bridge’s roadway deck since mid-July.

During the upcoming overnight closures, the bridge’s temporary walkway will remain open. However, there will be periods when flaggers will need to halt pedestrian crossings for safety reasons while the overhead platform sections are removed. Pedestrian delays could last up to 10 minutes at times, though pedestrian traffic is generally light during overnight hours.

The bridge is expected to reopen to Pennsylvania-bound vehicular traffic and allow uninterrupted pedestrian crossings after each overnight restricted-travel period next week.

These upcoming overnight closures are unrelated to this summer’s discovery of a deteriorated critical structural connection in the bridge’s second span from the Pennsylvania side. A separate schedule for addressing that issue, which is not part of the ongoing rehabilitation project, is expected to be announced later this month.
