New Jersey ranks 8th highest in tax burden nationwide, WalletHub report finds

NEW JERSEY — New Jersey ranks as the state with the eighth-highest overall tax burden in the nation, according to a new report released by personal finance website WalletHub.

The 2026 Tax Burden by State report compared all 50 states based on property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales and excise taxes as a share of total personal income.

New Jersey’s overall tax burden was calculated at 9.52%, placing it eighth in the country.

The report found the state has the second-highest property tax burden at 4.38%, while ranking 22nd in individual income tax burden at 2.42%. New Jersey ranked significantly lower in sales and excise taxes, coming in 43rd at 2.72%.

WalletHub said the rankings are intended to provide a clearer picture of how state and local taxes impact residents relative to their income.

The study comes as taxpayers prepare for the April 15 tax filing deadline.
